In this icebreaker, PSLs will have to write a few random facts about themselves on the whiteboard. The Y1s will then have to guess which PSL does each fact describe.
Class 101'15 used this activity during the session on Introduction 1. Separate the class into two teams, each team on one side of the class.
2. Use a blanket to block the teams' view of each other. 3. One person from each side sits in front of the blanket. 4. When the blanket is dropped, each person on both sides of the blanket are to say each other's names. 5. Whoever says the other person's name first is the winner for that round. 6. The person who loses the round will join the opposing team. 7. The team with more people in the end wins overall. Classic 101'12 used this activity during their last PSL session. They said,"It seems meaningful read letters written to themselves as a Y1 as it is very personalized and this also allows themselves to see how they have grown since Y1 " Write a letter to yourself, the year 1 who just entered RGS a year ago. What would you like to tell her?
Some guiding questions:
Classic 107'12 used this in their last session as a fun and meaningful way for everyone to reflect. It was very sweet when the Year 1s hugged whilereturned each other's airplanes in a chain and fostered the sense of togetherness. - PSLs will give each Year 1 a piece of coloured paper and ask them to sit in a circle.
- Year 1s will have to write down answers to the three questions that will be asked. - Once they are done, they will fold it into a paper plane and write a pen name on the plane. - The planes will then be thrown inside the circle, and each Year 1 is supposed to take another person’s paper plane. - Then, one person will read out what was written on the plane she received, and then call out the pen name of the person who wrote it. She will return her the plane and give her an encouraging hug. - This process goes on with the person who’s plane has been read out, as she will have to read out what was written on the plane she received. This will go on until everyone’s plane has been read out. Classic 103'12 and 107'12 used this activity during the first session and Peer Support session respectively. The year 1s found this activity quite entertaining and most of them had fun. It encourages trust and unity among them as they learn how to rely and support one another in this activity. Sec 1s will be asked to go to the field or the empty space beside the J block staircases and asked to form a circle. In that circle, the Sec 1s will have to figure a way to have everyone sitting on each others lap as shown in the picture above.
Tips:
This activity was recommended by Classic 103'12. Here's what they said about the activity: 1. A short visualization exercise will be done with the class, with the lights switched off. I will ask them to close their eyes, take a few deep breaths and imagine their ideal class.
What would you like your class to be like? Bonded? Happy? Now that you have formed the image of your ideal class, think of how you as an individual can contribute to that ideal class. Think about how you can work towards that ideal class. Now imagine it is already November, the end of your term as a Sec One. How has your class been? Have you had a great year with your classmates? Do you feel a sense of belonging to the class? Do you love your classmates? 2. Year Ones will be given 5 minutes to write a letter to their future selves: 1) Their aspirations and goals for the class for the year ahead, the person who they want to be 2) How they can accomplish these goals and steps they can take 3) Obstacles and challenges they foresee, and how they can overcome them. 3. Year Ones would be assured that these letters are highly confidential (put it in a box) and they will be returned the letters in the last session to review and reflect if they’ve accomplished their goals. Remind them that they will have to actively work towards these goals, instead of merely setting them. Ultimately, we’re here to help them, and in order to gain as much as they can from these sessions, they themselves must put their all and really reflect. 107'12 Classic used the following activities to introduce the rather abstract concept of school and class spirit to their Year 1s. The spooky decorations and atmosphere in the class created suspense and excitement for the year 1s! Envisioning 1. With the lights off, the PSL will ask the Y1s to close their eyes and let them imagine. the PSL will read out a few questions slowly to let them think and picture their ideal class: Script: You are now in your new class which you will stay with for 2 years. You have experienced different classes previously in your primary school. Think of each of your class, from Primary 1 all the way to primary 6. Did you have a good time with them? (Pause) There probably were some classes you liked more than others. Now I’m very sure you have an ideal class in mind, a class you hope that will make you feel at home in. How does it look like to you? (Pause) Is everyone smiling happily, or maybe lending each other a hand? I want you to remember how it looks like. This is the picture I want you to bring to this class, 107. After you’re done, please look up. Class 107 Jigsaw Puzzle 1. Jigsaw pieces with the Y1s’ names on each piece will be hidden in the classroom beforehand. 2. Each Y1 is to find their own piece and sit down in the circle. No further instructions will be given as we can then see whether they will help each other by giving the pieces they find (if their friends’ names are on it) to their friends, or if they find it but put it back if it is not theirs. 3. After they all have their piece, they are to write one or two characteristics that they think they have which will contribute to the class. For example, "I am creative and can help the class organize different and fun class outings!" Y1s are given 5min to fill their piece in. 4. After the Y1s are done doing up their jigsaw piece, they will go to the centre of the circle and put together the jigsaw. Post thoughts: For the jigsaw puzzle 107'12 classic did, the pieces were all different and formed "I <3 7" when put together. The class spent quite a long time putting the pieces together and only the few in front could participate in putting it together. |
